The AFRA BMP

The AFRA Best Management Practice for Management of Used Aircraft Parts and Assemblies and for Recycling of Aircraft Materials (BMP) provides a comprehensive framework of best practices for managing used aircraft parts and assemblies, as well as recycling aircraft materials at the end of their service life. These guidelines support environmentally responsible and efficient disassembly, dismantling and recycling processes, ensuring compliance with industry-leading sustainability standards.

AFRA is excited to announce the release of BMP 5.2 for Disassembly and Recycling and a new BMP for Dismantling, effective January 1, 2026. This latest revision introduces key updates to enhance safety, consistency, and sustainability in aircraft disassembly, dismantling and recycling, reinforcing AFRA’s commitment to industry excellence.

Key Updates to the Best Management Practices (BMP)

  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Guidelines – Reducing risks associated with handling sensitive components.
  • Strengthened Subcontractor Compliance – Enhancing oversight and accountability within disassembly and recycling operations.
  • Asset End-of-Life Certificate – Standardizing documentation for responsible aircraft and component recycling.
  • Standardized Terminology – Streamlining procedures to improve clarity and operational efficiency.
  • New standalone Dismantling BMP
  • New AFRA Form 0: End of Life Certificate - Form that can be used for documenting the permanent withdrawal and disposal of assets.

Implementation Timeline

  • Release Date: January 1, 2026
  • Transition Period: Six months
  • Full Compliance Deadline: July 1, 2026

What This Means for You

  • The updated BMP 5.2 is now available
  • AFRA-accredited companies will have a six-month transition period to implement the changes.
  • By July 1, 2026, all accredited companies must be in full compliance with BMP 5.2 standards.

This timeline ensures accredited companies have sufficient time to integrate the updates while maintaining alignment with AFRA’s high standards.
